What Is Three Phase Power?

Single phase supply delivers power at 230V through one active conductor. Three phase power delivers through three, at 400V between phases, offset from each other so power arrives continuously rather than in a single pulsing cycle.

The practical effect is more available capacity and smoother delivery. Large loads can be spread across three phases instead of stacking onto one, and motors and heavy plant run better on it.

Most Australian homes are single phase. Most commercial and industrial sites are three phase. The interesting cases are the residential properties sitting between the two, which is where most power supply upgrade conversations land.

Why Would a Sydney Home Need Three Phase Power?

Because of accumulated load, not any single appliance.

The usual picture is a property that has added ducted air conditioning, a pool, an induction cooktop, a workshop and now a car charger, asking one supply to carry all of it. Individually none of those forces the issue. Together they do.

The specific triggers we see most: a workshop with fixed machinery, multiple large air conditioning systems, a pool with heating, a home with two EVs charging, a granny flat sharing the supply through supply separation, or a property where the main switch already trips on hot evenings.

When Is Three Phase Power the Wrong Answer?

More often than you would think, and this is worth reading before accepting a quote.

A three phase upgrade is a bigger job than upsizing single phase. It changes the service, the consumer mains, the metering and usually the switchboard. If the calculated demand can be met by a larger single phase supply, that is the cheaper and simpler path and it is the right one.

For EV charging specifically, most current electric vehicles cap their onboard AC charging at a level a single phase supply delivers comfortably overnight. Paying to convert a whole property to three phase for a car that will not use it is a genuine waste, and load management on the existing supply is frequently the better answer.

The honest test is the maximum demand calculation. If it says single phase, we will tell you single phase.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Three Phase Upgrades

Running out of power for a workshop, a pool, ducted air conditioning or a fleet of chargers? Three phase power is where that conversation usually ends up, and it is worth understanding what it actually gives you before committing. Some Sydney properties genuinely need it. Others are being quoted a three phase upgrade when a larger single phase supply would have done the job for less.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been carrying out three phase conversions across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. Every three phase upgrade is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, certified with a CCEW, and covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7 with same-day response.

How Does a Three Phase Conversion Work?

It is a full supply job, not a switchboard change.

We start with a maximum demand assessment establishing what capacity is required and confirming three phase is the right answer. We then confirm the existing connection arrangement and what your network area requires, since Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy run different processes.

The work involves upgrading the service connection, installing new three phase consumer mains at the calculated size, changing the metering arrangement, replacing or upgrading the switchboard to distribute three phases with balanced circuit allocation, testing and re-energising. Supply comes off during the changeover, arranged through power connect and disconnect, and on commercial sites that usually means an after-hours window.

Then the CCEW is issued and the Notification of Service Work goes to the distributor.

What About Network Capacity for Three Phase?

Worth raising honestly, because it is the variable nobody controls.

A three phase supply depends on what the local network can deliver, not only on what is installed at the property. In some areas, particularly where the network already carries significant load, a capacity increase depends on the distributor's assessment.

We will not promise a specific outcome or timeframe, because that is the distributor's decision. What we do is confirm the position for your address early, before you have committed to a scope that turns out not to be available. Where the load is more than the network can support at that address, the distributor's response sets what is possible, and knowing that early is what stops a scope being built on an assumption.

Do Your Appliances Need Changing for Three Phase?

Mostly no, and this is a common worry.

Existing single phase appliances continue working exactly as they did. They are simply distributed across the three phases rather than sharing one. Nothing needs replacing because the supply changed.

What three phase power enables is equipment specifically requiring it: larger machinery, commercial plant, some larger air conditioning systems, and higher-output EV charging. You are buying headroom and the ability to run three phase equipment, not a requirement to replace what you have.

What can three phase do that single phase cannot?

It carries more total load and runs equipment designed for it: larger ducted air conditioning, workshop machinery, commercial kitchen gear and faster EV charging. For a typical home with normal appliances, single phase is usually sufficient.

Do I need three phase for an EV charger?

Usually not. Most households are well served by a 7 kW single phase charger, and most current EVs cannot use 22 kW AC anyway. Three phase makes sense for two EVs, very high daily distance, or a workplace.

What does converting to three phase involve?

New consumer mains sized for three phase, switchboard work to accept it, a metering change, and the application to Ausgrid or Endeavour. It is a whole-of-supply job rather than a single item, which is why it is quoted as a package.

Is three phase available everywhere in Sydney?

Not automatically. It depends what is in your street and what the network can supply at your address. The application establishes that, which is why we check availability before quoting the full conversion.

Will my power bill go up on three phase?

You pay for what you use, and three phase does not make the same appliances consume more. Some supply charges differ, so ask your retailer what applies once the conversion is complete.
