What Is an Underground Service Line?
An underground service line is the cable running below ground from your distributor's network to your property, usually from a pillar on the verge or a nearby pole, through conduit, to your meter position.
You have one if your street has no overhead wires, which generally means either a newer estate built with underground power from the start, or an established area where the network has been converted. The connection point is at the pillar or pole base, and from there the underground cable and conduit on your side are your responsibility. See service lines if you are not certain which supply type you have.

Why Do Underground Service Lines Fail?
Being buried protects a cable from weather and trees but introduces its own problems.
Joints and pits. Underground faults concentrate where cable is joined or accessed, not in the middle of an undisturbed run. Pits fill with water in low-lying ground and along Sydney's river corridors, and moisture works into aged connections over years.
Excavation damage. Someone digs. A fence post, a pool, a retaining wall, landscaping, a new driveway. This is one of the most common causes of underground cable faults and it is usually recent work on the property.
Tree roots. Roots find conduit, crush it, and eventually reach the cable. Common in established suburbs with mature street trees.
Age and conduit failure. Older conduit becomes brittle, cracks and lets water in. The fault then presents as intermittent tripping rather than a clean failure, which is exactly why it often goes unexplained for years and why proper supply fault finding matters more here than anywhere else.

How Do You Find an Underground Cable Fault?
Carefully, and before anyone touches a shovel.
Digging up an underground service line to look for a fault is the expensive way to do it. The work is testing first: insulation resistance and continuity testing to establish what kind of fault it is and roughly where, then locating the run and narrowing the position before any excavation.
That sequencing is the whole job. Get it right and you open one section of ground. Get it wrong and you trench a driveway looking for a fault that turned out to be at the pit.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Underground Service Line Work
Power dropping out for no obvious reason, with nothing visible anywhere? Underground service line faults are the quiet ones. There is no cable on the ground and no bracket hanging off the wall, just intermittent tripping that worsens over months until the supply finally gives up. By then the underground fault has usually been developing a long time.
Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been installing and repairing underground service lines across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised across the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. All underground service line work is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, documented with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, and backed by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, same-day response, 24/7 across Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

When Does Sydney's Ground Change the Job?
More than most people expect, and it is worth knowing before you get a quote.
Across the north, the northern beaches, the harbour foreshore and much of the north shore you are on sandstone. Trenching for underground cable there is a rock saw job, not a shovel job, and that changes both the time and the method.
Across much of the west and south west you are on shale and reactive clay. That ground moves seasonally, which works on conduit and joints over the years and is part of why aged underground services in those areas fail where they do.
Then there is the water table. Low-lying land near the rivers and creeks means pits that fill, and underground faults concentrating exactly there.
None of that excuses a vague quote. It is the reason a proper quote comes after someone has looked at the ground.

Where we work
Level 2 electricians across Greater Sydney
We are on the road across the whole metropolitan area, from the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs out to Penrith, up to the Hills District and down through the Sutherland Shire. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.
New Estates, Pillars and Underground Connections
If you are in one of the newer estates across Sydney's north west or south west, your underground work is a different category entirely.
The supply is recent, so failures are rare. What comes up instead is new underground connections, pillar work, capacity for a second dwelling, and supply for a build. The cable is not old and tired; it either does not exist yet or needs to be bigger.
That means new development connections and temporary builders supply if you are building, or supply separation if you are splitting a lot or adding a granny flat. Where the underground service simply cannot carry a modern load, it becomes a power supply upgrade rather than a repair.

Converting from Overhead to Underground
A good portion of underground work in Sydney's established suburbs is not repair at all. It is owners removing the wires from the front of the property during a renovation, which is both an appearance decision and a permanent fix for vegetation and storm exposure that plagues overhead service lines.
It is a bigger job than a repair and needs planning around trenching, the connection point and reinstatement. See overhead to underground conversion for what is involved.

Get Your Underground Fault Found Properly
If your power keeps dropping out and there is nothing to see above ground, the answer is underground, and the cheapest version of that job starts with testing rather than digging.
Call 0485 824 714 or send an enquiry describing what the fault does and when it started, and we will quote free. We will explain what testing is involved, what we expect to find, and what it costs to put right. Sydney and the Blue Mountains, 24 hours.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?
Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.
A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.
FAQs
Underground Service Lines questions, answered
The things people ask us most about underground service lines in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.
Who does the digging, you or me?
We can do the whole job including trenching, or you can have the trench open already if there is an excavator on site for other work. If you dig it yourself it has to meet depth and bedding requirements, so talk to us before you start rather than after.
How deep does the trench need to be?
Depth depends on where the cable runs and what is above it, with deeper cover required under driveways and vehicle areas. The NSW Service and Installation Rules set the minimums, and we set the trench out to meet them so it passes inspection.
Can you find an underground fault without digging up the whole run?
Usually. Fault location narrows the problem down to a section before anything is opened up, which is the difference between a targeted excavation and a trench across your whole front yard.
What happens to my driveway or lawn?
We discuss reinstatement before the job. Lawn and garden are normally backfilled and made good by us. Concrete, pavers and driveways need a decision up front about who reinstates them, because that materially affects the quote.
Is underground better than overhead?
It removes the wires from view, takes trees and storms out of the equation, and generally needs less maintenance. It costs more up front because of the trenching. Whether it is worth it depends on your site and whether the ground is being opened anyway.
