EV Charger Installation Sydney
Most EV charger installations are not really about the charger. They are about whether the supply behind the wall can carry it.
- Supply assessed before quoting. The charger is the easy part.
- Load management before an upgrade. Often cheaper.
- We lodge the network application. You do not deal with the distributor.

What Is an EV Charger Installation?
An EV charger installation is hardwiring a charging unit to your property's supply on a dedicated circuit, with correct protection, sized so the property can carry the load, and commissioned to charge safely.
The visible part is the unit on the wall. The work is the dedicated circuit back to the switchboard, a spare way on the board to land it, correct residual current protection for DC fault current, and assessment of whether the supply carries a continuous load on top of everything else the property runs.

Why Does the Supply Matter More Than the Charger?
Because an EV charger is not like other appliances.
A kettle draws hard for two minutes. An oven cycles. A car charger draws steadily for hours, usually in the evening, at exactly the time the rest of the house is busiest. It is the closest thing to a constant load most homes have ever had.
On a property with a modern board and adequate mains, that is fine. On a 1960s home in western Sydney with original mains, a full switchboard and no spare ways, adding a continuous load on a hot February evening is how you end up resetting the main switch every night. That is why the first thing we do is look at the supply, not the parking space.

Which EV Charging Speed Do You Actually Need?
Less than most people assume, and this is where money gets wasted.
| Charger | Supply required | Roughly adds per hour | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 kW single phase | Standard single phase | About 40 km | Most households with one EV charging overnight |
| 11 kW three phase | Three phase supply | About 60 km | Two EVs sharing, or high daily distance |
| 22 kW three phase | Three phase with capacity spare | About 120 km | Workplaces, fleets and vehicles accepting 22 kW AC |
Two limits apply, not one. Your supply sets a ceiling, and so does the onboard AC charger inside the car. Most current EVs cap onboard AC charging well below 22 kW, so paying for a 22 kW unit and a three phase conversion to feed it achieves nothing the car can use.
For the large majority of Sydney households, a single phase 7 kW EV charger is the right call. A car parked overnight has twelve hours to recover a commute that took forty minutes.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for EV Charger Installation
Bought an EV, or about to? The charger itself is straightforward. What decides the job is whether your switchboard, consumer mains and service line can carry a continuous load for hours without tripping the main switch every time the dryer goes on. Across a lot of Sydney housing, the honest answer is not yet.
This is where most EV specialists reach their limit. They can supply and mount a charger, but the moment the supply needs upgrading they must bring in a Level 2 ASP. Sydney Level 2 Electrician is an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, so your EV charger installation and any supply work behind it are handled by one team in one job. Fifteen years of connection work across Sydney, completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, certified with a CCEW, and covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7.

Do You Need a Supply Upgrade for an EV Charger?
Not always, and finding out is worth the site visit.
If the switchboard is modern with spare ways and the mains are adequate, the EV charger goes in on a dedicated circuit and nothing else changes.
If the board still runs ceramic fuses, has no RCD protection, or has nothing spare to connect to, it needs bringing up to standard first through a switchboard upgrade.
If the consumer mains are original on a pre-1975 property, they are likely the real constraint rather than the board.
And if calculated demand genuinely exceeds what the single phase supply carries, that is a power supply upgrade conversation. Where a meter change is involved, it usually pairs with a smart meter installation, particularly if you also have solar.

Load Management: the Cheaper Answer
Before quoting an upgrade, we look at whether load management solves it instead.
A smart EV charger can monitor total household draw and throttle itself automatically when the oven, dryer and air conditioning are all running, then return to full output once the house quietens. Peak demand stays inside what the existing supply carries and the upgrade becomes unnecessary.
The trade-off is charging occasionally slower for an hour or two in the evening, which matters very little to a car sitting in a driveway until morning.
It does not fit every situation. Two EVs on high daily distance, or a workplace with several bays, needs real capacity. But where load management genuinely works, it is the answer we recommend, and it is the cheaper one.

EV Charger Installation for Strata and Apartments
Apartment EV charging is a harder problem than a house, and it is where much of the demand in Sydney's inner suburbs actually sits.
The complications are real: the supply serves the building rather than your lot, common property, who pays for what, how electricity is billed back, and strata approval before anything happens. Where a building wants multiple bays, the site's total capacity becomes the limiting factor rather than any individual charger, which brings the building's metering arrangement into scope.
It is solvable, but it starts with understanding the building's supply, not with choosing a charger. Work of this kind almost always runs as an after-hours booking so residents are not left without power.

Workplace and Fleet EV Charging
Multiple bays at a workplace, depot or commercial site is a capacity project rather than an installation.
The question becomes what the site's supply can deliver, whether the existing connection can be uprated, and whether the network itself needs work to support it. Fleet charging is increasingly the reason commercial sites outgrow the supply they were built with, so the useful first step is a capacity enquiry rather than a charger specification. Load management is often the cheaper answer, and it is worth pricing against an upgrade before committing to either.
Book an EV Charger Supply Check
Tell us your car, where you park, and where the switchboard is. That is enough to start.
Call 0485 824 714 or send an enquiry with those three things and a photo of your board if you can, and we will quote free. We will tell you whether you need an upgrade, whether load management does the job instead, and what the EV charger installation actually costs. Sydney and the Blue Mountains, 24 hours.

FAQs
EV Charger Installation questions, answered
The things people ask us most about ev charger installation in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.
Can I just plug my EV into a normal power point?
You can, with the granny cable most cars ship with, but it is slow and it was never intended as the permanent solution. A dedicated circuit and a proper charger is safer for continuous high load and far more practical day to day.
Do I need a Level 2 electrician for an EV charger?
For the charger itself, a general electrician can do the installation. You need a Level 2 ASP when the supply has to change to support it: bigger consumer mains, a metering change or a conversion to three phase.
How do I know if my supply can handle a charger?
It comes down to maximum demand: what your property already draws plus the charger, against what the supply can deliver. We assess that before quoting, because the answer decides whether you need a supply upgrade or just load management.
What is load management and will it save me money?
It is a controller that throttles the charger when the rest of the house is drawing heavily, so you stay within your existing supply. Where it works, it avoids the cost of a supply upgrade entirely, which is often the cheaper answer.
Can I get a charger installed in an apartment block?
Often yes, but it is a different job. It involves strata approval, deciding how the electricity is metered and billed to your lot, and whether the building has spare capacity. Start with strata, then talk to us about what the building can support.
