What Is a Temporary Builders Supply?
A temporary builders supply is a temporary connection to the network providing power to a construction site while the permanent supply does not yet exist or has been disconnected.
Physically it is usually a builders pole or temporary board carrying a metered supply, with outlets for site use, protected and arranged to the requirements applying to construction sites. It is connected by a Level 2 ASP, metered, and removed at the end.
It is a proper connection, not an extension lead from next door. It is metered, certified and notified to the distributor like any other supply.

Why Can't a Build Just Use the Existing Supply?
Sometimes it can, and when that works it is the simpler answer.
But often it cannot. On a knockdown rebuild the existing supply goes with the house. On a greenfield block there has never been one. On a renovation, the works may run straight through the existing service line, or the point of attachment may be on the part of the building coming down.
There is also the capacity question. Site power draws differently to household power: saws, compressors, welders, lighting towers, site sheds. An original supply on an older property is frequently not adequate for a build happening around it, which is why a power supply upgrade often follows once the permanent connection goes in.

When Should Temporary Builders Supply Be Booked?
Earlier than feels necessary, and this is the most useful thing on this page.
The distributor's process for a temporary connection takes time and does not compress because your builder is standing on site with a crew. The application, the network area requirements and the scheduling all have real lead time.
Book it as soon as a site start date is roughly known, even if it moves. Getting into the queue early costs nothing. Discovering the lead time on the day the excavator arrives costs a week of everybody's time.
The other timing point is removal. A temporary supply left connected after the permanent one is live is a cost nobody is watching. Plan the changeover as part of the program.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Builders Supply
Starting on site and need power before the permanent connection exists? Temporary builders supply is the connection keeping a build running from the first day of demolition through to the point the real supply goes live. It is also, reliably, the thing nobody books early enough.
Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been installing temporary builders supply across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on both the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. Every temporary supply is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, certified with a CCEW, and covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7 with same-day response.

How Does Builders Supply Fit With the Permanent Connection?
Think of it as a sequence with three points.
Start: the existing supply is disconnected where one exists, and the temporary builders supply goes in. See power connect and disconnect.
Through the build: the site runs on temporary power. Faults get attended and the arrangement can be modified if the program changes.
End: the permanent connection is installed and energised, the site changes over, and the temporary supply is disconnected and removed. On a new build that permanent connection is usually a new development connection; on a rebuild it is a new service, new consumer mains and new metering. Where the build creates a second dwelling or splits a lot, supply separation comes into it too.
Planning all three at the start is considerably cheaper than treating them as three separate jobs when each becomes urgent.

What Goes Wrong With Builders Supply on Site?
Three things, and all three are avoidable.
Booked too late. Covered above, and the most common by a distance.
Undersized for the site. A supply sized for a couple of power tools does not run a site with concrete equipment, multiple trades and a site shed. Tell us what is actually going to be plugged in, including the peak days.
Positioned badly. A builders pole in the wrong place gets in the way of the excavator, the concrete pour or the scaffold, and moving it mid-build is a job nobody budgeted for. Worth five minutes with the site plan before it goes in.

Faults on Temporary Supply During a Build
A temporary builders supply takes a beating. It sits in an active construction site, gets knocked, gets rained on, and carries rough loads from equipment not always in the best condition.
When it fails, everything stops. That is why we run same-day response on site faults and are available 24/7; a build losing power at 7am loses the whole day if it waits. See emergency Level 2 electrician for urgent attendance, or supply fault finding if the fault is upstream of the temporary board rather than at it.

FAQs
Temporary Builders Supply questions, answered
The things people ask us most about temporary builders supply in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.
How quickly can site power be connected?
Once the application is lodged and approved, the physical installation is usually a single visit. The lead time is the distributor side, so get it started as early as possible rather than the week the trades arrive.
What size supply does my site need?
It depends what is running: power tools alone is very different from a site shed, lighting and a crane. Tell us what will be on site at peak and we will size it so it does not trip constantly.
Who owns the temporary supply pole?
It is installed for the site and removed at the end of the build. Whether it is hired or purchased depends on the arrangement, and we set that out in the quote so it is clear what happens at completion.
Does the temporary supply need to be tested?
Yes, and it needs to stay compliant for the life of the build, including RCD protection for the tools plugged into it. It is inspected and certified at installation like any other Level 2 work.
Can the temporary supply become the permanent one?
They are separate connections. The permanent supply is applied for and installed on its own terms, and the temporary supply is removed once the site no longer needs it. Planning both at the same time avoids a gap.
