What Is a Service Line?

A service line, sometimes called service mains, is the set of conductors running between your distributor's network and your property's point of supply. It stops at the point of attachment on an overhead service, or at the connection pillar on an underground service, and from there your consumer mains carry power to your switchboard.

The distinction matters because of who owns what. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy own the poles, the wires in the street and the transformers. From the connection point onwards, the service line and its condition are the property owner's responsibility. That surprises most Sydney homeowners, and it is usually an electrical defect notice that breaks the news.

Why Does the Supply Type Change the Job?

Overhead service lines and underground service lines fail in completely different ways and are repaired using completely different methods.

Overhead service lines are exposed. Wind works the attachment loose over decades, trees grow into the span, salt air corrodes fittings in coastal suburbs, and a single storm can pull the whole service off the fascia. The failures are visible and almost always at the attachment. That is why overhead service line repairs so often start at the bracket rather than the cable.

Underground service lines are protected but harder to reach. They fail at joints, at pits, and where excavation or tree roots have damaged the conduit. Water gets into aged conduit and the fault shows as intermittent tripping long before anything stops working, which makes underground service line fault location most of the job. In the sandstone country across Sydney's north, getting to the fault is the rest of it.

When Does a Service Line Need Repair or Replacement?

There is no maintenance schedule for a service line. It gets attention when something forces the issue.

The common triggers are a defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, visible storm damage, a service line that has sagged or pulled away from the building, corrosion at the point of attachment, a power supply upgrade the existing cable cannot carry, a new connection on a build or subdivision, or an overhead to underground conversion during a renovation.

If you have been told your supply needs upgrading for three phase power, a granny flat or an EV charger, the service line is part of that conversation even if nobody has mentioned it yet.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Service Line Work

Not sure whether your property is fed by an overhead or underground service line? Step outside and look up. If a cable runs from a pole in the street to a bracket on your roofline, you have an overhead service line. If there is a green pillar on the verge and no wires in sight, your supply is underground. That single distinction decides what any service line repair, replacement or upgrade will involve.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been working on service lines across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, which means we handle the service line connection between the distribution network and your property, including the application to the distributor. Every service line job is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued on completion. We are available 24/7 with same-day response, we quote free, and all service line work carries our Lifetime Labour Warranty.

Who Can Work on a Service Line in NSW?

Only an accredited Level 2 Accredited Service Provider. This is the line separating Level 2 electrical work from general electrical work, and it is not a technicality.

A licensed electrician can work on everything inside your installation: power points, lighting, internal wiring, and switchboards on an unchanged supply. The moment work crosses to the network side of the connection point, it requires a Level 2 ASP accredited under the NSW ASP Scheme and authorised to work on that network. An electrician without that accreditation cannot lawfully carry out service line work, and the distributor will not accept the connection.

Where we work

Level 2 electricians across Greater Sydney

We are on the road across the whole metropolitan area, from the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs out to Penrith, up to the Hills District and down through the Sutherland Shire. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.

Service Lines Across Sydney and the Blue Mountains

Where you are changes what we find. The older suburbs through the inner west, inner south and eastern beaches are overwhelmingly overhead, with original brackets carrying loads nobody imagined when they were installed, which is why consumer mains upgrades so often follow a service line repair in those areas.

The newer estates across the north west and south west are underground, so the work there is pillars, conduit and new connections rather than repairs, usually alongside temporary builders supply and new development connections.

Up through the Blue Mountains it is Endeavour Energy territory: overhead service lines through heavy vegetation, on properties with long driveways and private power poles, in an area that takes serious weather. When a storm brings one of those down, it becomes an emergency Level 2 job rather than a scheduled one.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.

A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.

FAQs

Service Lines questions, answered

The things people ask us most about service lines in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Still not sure?

Call us and describe the job. No sales pitch, just a straight answer.

Who owns the service line, me or the network?

The network owns the wires up to the connection point at your property. From that point to your switchboard, the service line is the property owner's responsibility, which is why repairs and replacements are quoted to you rather than fixed for free by Ausgrid or Endeavour.

Will my power be off while the service line is replaced?

Yes, for part of the job. The supply has to be made dead before the old line comes off and stays off until the new one is connected and tested. Most residential service line jobs are a few hours of outage, and we tell you the expected window before we start.

Do I need permission from Ausgrid or Endeavour first?

We handle that. Service line work is notified or applied for through the distributor depending on what is changing, and as an accredited ASP we lodge it on your behalf. You do not need to contact them yourself.

Can you tell me what is wrong from a photo?

Often yes. A clear photo of where the line attaches to the building and a wider shot showing the run back to the pole usually tells us whether it is a point of attachment issue, a damaged line or something at the switchboard end. Send it through and we will tell you what we are looking at.

What paperwork do I get when the work is finished?

A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, and the notification lodged with your distributor. Keep the CCEW with your property records; it is the document that proves the work was done by a licensed contractor to the NSW Service and Installation Rules.
