What Is an Overhead Service Line?

An overhead service line is the set of conductors running through the air from your distributor's pole to your building. It ends at the point of attachment, a bracket fixed to your fascia, roofline or wall, and from there your consumer mains take power down to the meter and switchboard.

The cable itself is usually decades old on established Sydney housing. Insulation degrades in UV, fittings corrode, and the attachment takes constant mechanical load from wind moving the span. None of it is dramatic on any given day, and all of it accumulates. For the difference between this and a buried supply, see our overview of service lines.

Why Do Overhead Service Lines Fail?

Four things account for most of what we see across Sydney.

Weather. Wind works a span back and forth for thirty years and fatigues the attachment. One severe storm finishes it. Sydney's storm season runs through spring and summer, and emergency call-outs track it exactly.

Trees. Branches grow into a span, rub insulation through, or come down on it. This dominates through the leafy established suburbs, the upper north shore, the inner west, and right through the Blue Mountains where canopy is heaviest.

Corrosion. Within about a kilometre of open water, salt gets into everything. Fittings on an eastern beaches or northern beaches property degrade years earlier than identical fittings inland. The tell is a chalky, rust-stained fixing.

Age. Housing built before the 1970s often still carries its original attachment hardware, sized for a very different world. In those properties the overhead service line and the consumer mains behind it are usually due together.

When Should You Get an Overhead Power Line Inspected?

Do not wait for it to come down. The warning signs are visible from the ground.

The cable sagging noticeably lower than it used to. Rust stains running down the fascia below the bracket. The bracket pulling away from the timber, or the timber looking soft. Branches touching or close to the span. Splits, cracking or exposed conductor in the insulation. Lights flickering across the whole house when it is windy.

That last one matters. If the whole property dims in wind, the connection is moving, and that is worth supply fault finding before it becomes an emergency. If Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy have already written to you about any of this, see electrical defect notices for how rectification works.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Overhead Service Line Repairs

Woken up to an overhead power line hanging lower than it was yesterday? Overhead service lines are the most exposed part of any electrical installation. They sit out in the weather for decades, take the full force of every southerly, and carry whatever the trees around them decide to do. When an overhead service line fails it is usually sudden, and it is almost always at the attachment.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been repairing and replacing overhead service lines across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised to work on both the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks covering Sydney and the Blue Mountains. All overhead service line work is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance issued on completion and our Lifetime Labour Warranty behind it. Free quotes, same-day response, available 24/7, because a damaged overhead power line is not something to leave until morning.

Who Is Responsible for an Overhead Service Line?

This is where most of the confusion sits.

Your distributor owns and maintains the network: the poles in the street, the wires between them, the transformers. From the connection point to your building, the overhead service line and everything it lands on is the property owner's responsibility.

So the branch on your service line is your problem, not the network's. The rusted bracket is yours. The sagging span from pole to fascia is yours. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy will make a dangerous situation safe, but the rectification is yours to arrange and it needs a Level 2 ASP. Where the span runs to a pole on your own land, that pole is yours too; see private power poles.

Where we work

Storm Damage and Emergency Overhead Repairs

If an overhead power line is down, on the ground or arcing, stay well clear and call your distributor's emergency line first. Treat any fallen conductor as live.

Once the situation is safe, the repair is ours. We attend 24/7 across Sydney and the Blue Mountains for storm damage, pulled attachments and services torn off during tree failures. Most storm jobs involve replacing the attachment hardware and a section of the overhead service line, then testing and re-energising.

Overhead Service Line Work on Difficult Sites

Not every overhead job is a clean span onto a fascia, and access decides a great deal.

Terrace streets through the inner west have no room for a vehicle, rear-lane access, and spans crossing neighbouring property. Steep blocks on the north shore and in the Blue Mountains put the attachment somewhere awkward and the pole somewhere worse. Long driveways on semi-rural land mean the span runs to a private pole rather than off the street.

We plan access before the job is booked rather than discovering it on the day. Where an owner would rather remove the overhead service line permanently, an overhead to underground conversion ends the vegetation and storm exposure for good, and is often done during a renovation when the ground is already open.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.

A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.

FAQs

Overhead Service Lines questions, answered

The things people ask us most about overhead service lines in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Still not sure?

Call us and describe the job. No sales pitch, just a straight answer.

0485 824 714
My line looks low but it is not down. Is that urgent?

Treat it as urgent if it is within reach, over a driveway, or sagging noticeably lower than it used to be. A low line is a contact risk long before it falls. Keep people and vehicles clear and call us; do not try to lift or move it.

A tree branch is touching my service line. Who removes it?

Do not touch it and do not let a tree company near it until the supply is made safe. Vegetation touching the line between the pole and your house is generally the property owner's problem to resolve, and it usually needs the supply isolated before anyone can prune safely.

Does the whole line have to be replaced, or can it be repaired?

It depends where the fault is. Damage at the attachment end is often a point of attachment repair rather than a full replacement. A degraded or undersized line along its whole run needs replacing. We tell you which one it is before quoting.

How long does an overhead service line replacement take?

Most straightforward residential replacements are done within a day, including the outage. Difficult access, a long span, or work that also needs the point of attachment or switchboard addressed will take longer, and we set that expectation in the quote.

Will insurance cover storm damage to my service line?

That is between you and your insurer, and it varies. What we can do is make it safe, restore supply, and give you an itemised invoice plus the compliance certificate, which is what insurers usually ask for.
