Switchboard Upgrades Sydney

A switchboard upgrade replaces your existing board with a modern one meeting current requirements: circuit breakers instead of fuses, residual current devices protecting the circuits, surge protection where appropriate, adequate capacity, and the whole board wired and labelled properly.

What it is not is simply swapping one box for another. A proper switchboard upgrade reassesses how circuits are arranged, whether that arrangement still makes sense, and whether the consumer mains feeding the board are adequate for what it now has to distribute.

The signals are worth checking against your own board.

Ceramic fuses with rewirable fuse wire. No safety switches, or only one covering a couple of circuits. Breakers tripping regularly under normal use. Any sign of heat: discolouration, scorch marks, a warm cover, a smell of hot plastic. A cracked enclosure. A board so full nothing more can be added. Any switchboard older than about twenty five years never touched since.

Then there are planned triggers: adding ducted air conditioning, a pool, a workshop, an EV charger, a second dwelling through supply separation, or converting to three phase power.

Worth raising before the job rather than during it.

Switchboard backing panels in properties built before roughly the late 1980s may contain asbestos, including the Zelemite-type panels commonly found behind older boards. It is very common across Sydney's fibro-era housing through the west, south west and the post-war suburbs generally.

Where it is present or suspected, the approach is to identify it early, not disturb it unnecessarily, and plan the switchboard upgrade around it so work proceeds safely and in the right order. Discovering it halfway through is how jobs stop dead, which is why we assess before quoting rather than after.
