What Is Electrical Metering?

Electrical metering is the equipment and connection arrangement measuring the electricity a property uses. The meter itself is the visible part, sitting in your meter box alongside the main switch.

What sits behind it matters more than most people realise. The meter connects on the network side of your supply, which is exactly why metering is Level 2 work rather than general electrical work. Changing an electricity meter is not like changing a light fitting; it involves the connection, the tails, the protection arrangement and the distributor's records.

Why Would an Electricity Meter Need Changing?

Six reasons cover almost everything.

Age and type. Older accumulation meters are progressively being replaced with digital and smart meters across NSW.

Solar. A solar system needs a meter capable of measuring flow in both directions. The existing meter usually is not.

Faults. Meters fail. Readings drift, displays go blank, or equipment is physically damaged, which sometimes presents first as an intermittent supply problem and needs fault finding to isolate.

A supply change. Converting to three phase power, increasing capacity through a power supply upgrade, or replacing consumer mains all affect the metering arrangement.

Relocation. The meter is in the way of a renovation or in a position no longer meeting access requirements; see meter box relocation.

A second dwelling or subdivision. Separate supplies need separate metering, which is the heart of supply separation.

Who Arranges a Meter Change in NSW?

This is where most confusion sits, so it is worth untangling.

Your retailer sends your bill and can be changed whenever you like. Your distributor, Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy depending on your address, owns the poles and wires and cannot be changed. The Level 2 ASP does the physical metering work.

Depending on why the meter is changing, the process can start with your retailer or with the work itself. Either way, installation is carried out by an accredited Level 2, notified to the distributor through a Notification of Service Work, and certified with a CCEW.

If you have rung your retailer and been told to find an electrician, then rung an electrician who said they cannot do it, that is why: metering needs a Level 2 specifically.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Metering Work

Been told you need a new electricity meter and not sure who actually installs it? Metering sits in an odd position. Your retailer bills you off it, your distributor owns the network it connects to, the property is yours, and yet the work can only be done by an accredited Level 2 ASP. Most people discover that after a couple of phone calls to the wrong company.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been carrying out metering work across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on both the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. Every metering job is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued on completion and our Lifetime Labour Warranty behind it. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7 with same-day response.

What Happens to Your Off Peak Circuit During a Meter Change?

Worth knowing before a meter change rather than after.

A lot of Sydney housing built before the 1990s still runs a controlled load circuit for electric hot water or slab heating on a separate tariff. When the metering arrangement changes, that circuit has to be dealt with deliberately: carried across, reconfigured, or consciously retired.

Handled properly it is a non-event. Handled carelessly it is how people end up with hot water on the wrong tariff, or a circuit that quietly stopped working and nobody noticed until the shower went cold. If your property has off peak hot water, say so when you book.

Metering in Strata and Commercial Buildings

Apartment blocks, shared buildings and commercial tenancies run different metering arrangements to a house, and the work has a different shape.

There is usually a metering panel serving multiple lots, house services covering common property, and sometimes an embedded network where the site takes one parent supply and distributes internally. Who authorises the work, who pays, and which lot a meter belongs to all have to be established before anything happens.

Practically that means strata approval and building access arranged in advance, and work scheduled around when the building can lose supply, which is why most of these jobs run as after-hours Level 2 work. Lead time is the constraint, not difficulty.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.

A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.

Can I choose which meter gets installed?

Not really. The meter type is driven by your retailer, the tariff and what the network requires, not by preference. What you can influence is the timing, the position of the meter and how any existing off peak circuit is handled.

How long does a meter change take?

A straightforward meter change is usually a couple of hours including the outage. It takes longer if the switchboard needs work to accept the new meter, which is common on older boards and is worth knowing about before the day.

Who pays for the meter, me or the retailer?

It depends why it is changing. Some retailer-driven changes are covered by them; owner-driven changes such as a supply upgrade, solar or a relocation are paid by the property owner. We quote the Level 2 work; your retailer covers their side.

Do I need to be home for a meter change?

Someone needs to give us access to the meter box and the switchboard, and the power will be off for part of it. If the box is externally accessible and you are comfortable with the outage happening while you are out, that can work.

I have solar. Does that change the metering?

Yes. Solar needs a meter capable of measuring flow in both directions. If you are installing solar and your existing meter is an older accumulation type, the metering change is part of getting the system operating properly.
