What Is a Meter Box Relocation?

A meter box relocation moves the meter, the switchboard, or both from their existing position to a new one, along with everything feeding them.

That means the consumer mains are rerouted or replaced to reach the new position, the point of attachment may need to move if the geometry changes, the metering equipment is transferred and reconnected, the switchboard is reinstalled, everything is tested, and supply is restored.

It is not a matter of unscrewing a box and refitting it further along the wall. The supply feeding it has to get there, and that is the bulk of the work.

Why Do Sydney Owners Relocate a Meter Box?

Four reasons, in rough order of frequency.

Renovation. The extension, new kitchen, deck or carport wants the space the meter box occupies. This is the dominant driver.

Access. Meter boxes installed inside garages, behind fixed structures, up high or in cramped positions are difficult to work on and difficult to read. Accessibility requirements have moved since many were installed.

Safety and exposure. A meter box in a position prone to moisture, flooding or mechanical damage is a problem waiting to happen. Along Sydney's river and creek corridors, equipment height is a genuine consideration.

Capacity. Sometimes the existing position simply cannot accommodate the size of switchboard a property now needs, which turns the job into a switchboard upgrade as well.

When Should a Meter Box Relocation Be Planned?

At design stage, and this is the most useful thing on this page.

If you are building, extending or renovating, the meter position should be on the drawings rather than discovered later. A relocation planned into the build is a straightforward job scheduled at a sensible point. The same relocation discovered at lock-up means opening finished work and holding up everything behind it.

Your builder or architect will not always raise it, because from their side it looks like an existing service that is somebody else's problem. Ask the question early. If a power disconnection is already in the build program, the relocation usually pairs with it.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Meter Box Relocation

Extending, and the meter box is now in the middle of your new kitchen? It happens constantly. Meter positions were decided decades ago on a floor plan that no longer exists, and Sydney renovations run straight into them. The good news is that a meter box relocation is a well-defined job. The bad news is that it is far easier at plan stage than after the frame is up.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician relocates switchboards and meter boxes across Sydney and the Blue Mountains, with 15 years of supply-side work behind us. How Does a Switchboard Relocation Work?

Assessment first: the current setup, where supply comes in, where the new position needs to be, and what the route between them looks like.

Then the supply interruption is arranged with your distributor. The new mounting position is prepared, the mains rerouted or replaced along the new route, the enclosure and metering equipment installed, the switchboard reinstalled and terminated, and everything tested including circuit voltages, load and earth continuity.

Then final inspection, restoration of supply, and compliance documentation issued and lodged. Generally a day for a straightforward residential relocation, longer where the mains run a long way, the route is difficult, or the point of attachment is moving too.

Should You Upgrade While the Board Is Out?

Almost always worth considering, because the expensive parts of both jobs overlap completely.

A meter box relocation already involves taking supply off, replacing or rerouting the consumer mains, and remounting the switchboard. If the board is aged, full, or still running ceramic fuses, upgrading it at the same time costs far less than a separate job six months later with a second supply interruption.

The same applies to capacity. If you are planning ducted air conditioning, a pool, an EV charger or a granny flat, the mains are being touched anyway, so sizing for the future load now avoids doing it twice. See power supply upgrades and three phase power upgrade.

What Can Complicate a Meter Box Relocation?

Three things, all easier to handle when known early.

Backing panels in older properties. Boards in pre-1990s housing may sit on asbestos-containing panels, which has to be identified and planned around before the board comes off rather than discovered during.

Heritage conservation areas. Where the new position affects a visible facade, council requirements in conservation areas may constrain where the meter box can go. Relevant right through the inner west, inner south and parts of the eastern suburbs, and the same constraint that shapes point of attachment work in those suburbs.

Strata and shared buildings. On apartments and duplexes the metering arrangement often serves more than one lot, bringing in strata approval and building access. Those conversations start early, and the work itself frequently needs an after-hours window.

Why would I move the meter box at all?

Usually because a renovation, extension, new driveway or carport has put it in the way, or because its current position no longer gives the access the distributor requires. Occasionally it is simply that the position is unsafe or unserviceable.

Where is the meter box allowed to go?

Somewhere with safe unobstructed access from outside, clear of hazards, at a compliant height and position. The distributor sets those requirements, so the new location is chosen from what is allowed rather than purely what suits the look of the house.

Does the service line have to move too?

Often yes. Moving where the supply terminates usually means re-terminating the service line and sometimes relocating the point of attachment as well. That is why relocation is quoted as a package rather than as a box being unscrewed and moved.

How long will the power be off?

A relocation is a bigger outage than a straight board swap because the supply is disconnected, the new position is established, and everything is reconnected and tested. Plan on most of a working day for a typical residential job.

Can I do this as part of a renovation?

It is the ideal time. Coordinating the relocation with the build avoids doing finishes twice and avoids a second outage. Bring us in while the plans are still moving rather than once the wall is up.
