What Is a Supply Fault?

A supply fault is a problem in the path between the network and your switchboard, rather than in the circuits inside your property.

That path runs from the connection point, along the service line, through the point of attachment or pillar, down the consumer mains, through the metering, to the main switch. A fault anywhere along it affects the whole property rather than one circuit.

That is the distinguishing feature. A fault on one circuit is an internal wiring issue and general electrician's work. A fault affecting everything, intermittently or completely, points at the supply and needs a Level 2.

Why Are Intermittent Electrical Faults So Hard to Find?

Because they are usually mechanical, and mechanical problems come and go.

A connection that has loosened makes contact until something moves it: wind on the service line, thermal expansion on a hot day, vibration. Water in an underground pit bridges a gap until it dries out. A corroded terminal conducts adequately until load rises and heat does the rest.

So the fault appears when conditions align and vanishes when they do not, which is exactly the behaviour making people think it has fixed itself. It has not. It is getting worse slowly, and the interval between events is shortening until it becomes an emergency call-out.

The useful information is in the pattern. When does it happen? Hot days? Windy days? After rain? Under heavy load? Those answers narrow the search considerably before anyone picks up a tool.

What Symptoms Are Worth Reporting?

Write these down before you call, because the detail genuinely helps.

Whole-property power loss that restores itself. Lights across the entire house dimming or brightening, particularly in wind or under load. The main switch tripping with no obvious cause. A burning smell or warmth at the meter box. Flickering affecting everything rather than one room. Power loss correlating with weather. Neighbours unaffected while you are out.

That last one is the key test. If the street is fine and you are not, the fault is on your side.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Supply Fault Finding

Power dropping out for no reason, coming back on its own, and nobody can tell you why? Intermittent supply faults are genuinely difficult, and they are where a lot of money gets wasted. Replacing a switchboard because the power keeps cutting out is an expensive way to discover the fault was in the mains.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been diagnosing supply faults across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks, which matters because a supply fault can sit on either side of the connection point and you need someone who can work on both. All fault finding is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, certified with a CCEW, and covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7.

How Is a Supply Fault Located?

Systematically, and with testing before excavation.

We start with a visual inspection of the whole supply path: connection point, service line, attachment or pillar, mains run, meter and switchboard. A surprising proportion of faults are visible to someone who knows what they are looking at.

Then electrical testing: insulation resistance, continuity, earth continuity and polarity, and load testing where the fault only appears under draw. That establishes what kind of fault it is and which section it is in.

Then localisation. On an underground service line, narrowing the position before opening any ground is the entire economics of the job. On an overhead service line, it is usually a matter of getting eyes on the attachment and the span properly.

Only then does anything get opened, replaced or repaired.

Where we work

We are on the road across the whole metropolitan area, from the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs out to Penrith, up to the Hills District and down through the Sutherland Shire. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.

Why Does the Order of Fault Finding Matter?

Because the alternative is guessing with a shovel.

Digging up a driveway to find an underground fault that turns out to be in the pit at the verge is a genuinely expensive mistake, and it happens. So does replacing a switchboard because the power kept cutting out, then discovering the consumer mains were the problem all along and the new board makes no difference.

Testing first costs a fraction of what fixing the wrong thing costs. It is also the only way to give an honest quote for the repair, because until you know where the fault is, nobody knows what the repair involves.

What Usually Turns Out to Be Wrong?

The common findings, roughly in order.

A deteriorated or loose connection at the point of attachment. Aged or damaged consumer mains, especially on pre-1975 Sydney properties. Water ingress at an underground joint or pit. A failing connection at the meter or main switch. Vegetation damage to an overhead service. Excavation damage to underground conduit, usually from recent work on the property. A private power pole with degraded hardware.

Occasionally the answer is that the supply is not faulty at all; it is simply undersized for the load and behaving exactly as an overloaded supply behaves. That is a power supply upgrade conversation rather than a repair, and it is worth knowing before you pay for a repair that will not help. Where a defect notice has already been issued on the same item, see electrical defect notices.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.

A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.

Half my house has power and half does not. What causes that?

That pattern often points to a fault on one leg of the supply or a neutral problem rather than a tripped circuit inside the house. It is a supply-side symptom, which is why a general electrician may not be able to resolve it.

My lights flicker and dim. Is that dangerous?

It can be. Flickering and dimming can indicate a loose or deteriorating connection, which generates heat where you cannot see it. It is worth investigating rather than living with, particularly if it is getting worse.

How do you find a fault you cannot see?

By testing systematically rather than guessing: isolating sections, measuring at each point, and using thermal imaging to find hot joints. The aim is to narrow it down before anything is opened up or replaced.

Will you find it in one visit?

Most faults are located in a single visit. Intermittent faults that only appear under certain loads or weather conditions are harder and occasionally need a return visit, which we will tell you rather than replacing parts hopefully.

What if the fault turns out to be the network's, not mine?

Then it stops being your bill. If testing shows the fault is on the distributor's side of the connection point, it is their responsibility to repair and we will tell you exactly that.
