What Is a Private Power Pole?
A private power pole is a pole standing on private property carrying the service line from the network to a building. It exists because the distance from the street to the building is too great for a single span, or because the geometry of the site requires it.
Your distributor's poles sit in the street or in an easement and belong to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. A pole inside your boundary carrying your supply belongs to you: the pole, its footing, the hardware on it, and the conductors on your side of the connection.
You are most likely to have a private power pole on a large block, at the end of a long driveway, on a battle-axe lot, or on semi-rural land. The Hills district, the Hawkesbury fringe, the Blue Mountains and pockets of the Sutherland Shire and northern beaches are full of them.

Why Do Private Power Poles Fail?
Mostly from the ground up, and mostly out of sight.
Timber poles rot at ground level. The failure happens where the pole meets soil, below the visible surface, driven by moisture and often accelerated by termites. A private pole can look sound at eye height and be seriously compromised at the footing.
Steel poles corrode, particularly at the base and in coastal or damp positions.
Footings move. Reactive clay across Sydney's west and south west shifts seasonally, and years of that work a pole out of plumb.
Hardware degrades. Cross arms, insulators and fixings age at their own rate, and the pole itself can be sound while what is on it is not.
Vegetation loads the span. A private pole with a tree growing into the overhead service line carries forces it was never designed for, which is also why storm season generates so many emergency call-outs on rural-fringe properties.

When Should a Private Power Pole Be Inspected?
If you have one and it has never been looked at, that is the answer.
The visible warning signs are a noticeable lean, cracking or splitting in timber, soft or spongy wood at the base, rust at the base of a steel pole, termite activity nearby, cracked or missing insulators, and a service line that has sagged since you last noticed it.
The ground-level check is the important one, and it is a looking job rather than a touching one. At the base, look for rust streaking or flaking on a steel pole, splitting or spongy timber on a wooden one, and soil that has been disturbed, eroded or washed away from the footing. Compare the lean against something vertical nearby, such as a fence post or the corner of the house, rather than testing it by hand.
Do not push, rock or lean on a private pole to see whether it moves. It is carrying a live service, and a pole loose enough to shift under a push is a pole close enough to failure that you should be standing well away from it. A leaning private power pole carrying a live service is a genuine hazard, not a maintenance item.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Private Power Pole Work
Got a power pole on your property and just found out it is your responsibility? It is one of the more unwelcome discoveries in property ownership, and it usually arrives with a defect notice attached. Most owners assume every pole belongs to the electricity network. The ones inside your boundary generally do not.
Sydney Level 2 Electrician installs, inspects, repairs and replaces private power poles across Sydney and the Blue Mountains, with 15 years of connection work behind us. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. Private power pole work is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, documented with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, and covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, same-day response, 24/7.

Does a Private Power Pole Always Need Replacing?
No, and this is worth asking before you accept a quote for a new one.
Plenty of private poles that look alarming need remedial work: refitting hardware, replacing a cross arm, resetting or reinforcing the footing, clearing vegetation, replacing insulators. That is a considerably smaller job than a full pole replacement.
Replacement is the answer when the pole has lost structural integrity, which usually means rot or corrosion at the footing, and that is a judgement made on inspection rather than from a photo. We inspect first and tell you which category you are in, because recommending a replacement on every private pole would be easier and it would not be honest.

What Is Involved in Replacing a Private Power Pole?
More than swapping one post for another, because supply has to come off and the connection has to be remade.
The sequence is assessment and pole selection, arranging the supply interruption with your distributor through power connect and disconnect, excavation and footing, setting the new pole, transferring hardware and conductors, testing, re-energising and documenting the work.
Pole choice matters. Timber, galvanised steel and steel each have their place depending on span, loads, soil and exposure. Access decides a lot too: a private power pole at the end of a 100 metre driveway on a steep block is a different proposition to one ten metres off the street, and that gets planned before booking rather than discovered on the day. Where the pole is replaced, the consumer mains running from it are often undersized for the distance as well as the load, so both are usually assessed together.

Private Power Poles and Defect Notices
This is how most owners discover they have one.
Distributor crews see private poles from the street, and a pole that is leaning, rotting or carrying failed hardware attracts a notice. It comes to the property owner with a rectification timeframe, because the private power pole is the owner's asset.
The instinct is to ring Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. The answer you will get is that it is yours. The work needs a Level 2 ASP and it needs documenting properly so the defect can be closed out; see electrical defect notices for how that runs.

FAQs
Private Power Poles questions, answered
The things people ask us most about private power poles in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.
How do I know if the pole is mine?
If it stands on your property and carries the supply from the street to your building, it is a private pole and it is yours to maintain. Poles in the street or on the verge belong to the network. If you are unsure, send a photo and we will tell you.
How long do private poles last?
A timber private pole typically gives decades of service, but the failure point is at ground level where rot sets in out of sight. Poles installed in the 1960s to 1980s across Sydney are the ones now reaching the end of their life.
My pole is leaning. Is it about to fall?
Treat a leaning pole as urgent. Lean usually means the base has lost strength, and the load of the line plus wind is what finishes it. Keep clear of it and call us rather than waiting for the next storm.
Can you replace a pole in the same hole?
Generally the new pole goes in close to the original position but not the identical hole, because the ground there has been disturbed. Where the old position no longer meets clearance requirements, the replacement is set in a compliant spot instead.
What about the old pole, do you take it away?
Yes, removal and disposal of the old pole is part of the job. Older poles can be treated timber, which has disposal requirements, and that is handled as part of the work rather than left on your property.
