What Is an Electrical Disconnection?

An electrical disconnection is the physical removal of supply at the connection point between the network and your property. It is not the same as flicking off your main switch, and it is not the same as closing your account with your retailer.

There are two kinds. A temporary disconnection takes power off while work happens then restores it, used for roof work, tree work, painting near the service line, or a renovation touching the supply. A permanent disconnection removes supply entirely, which is what happens before a demolition or when a property is taken off the grid.

A power reconnection is the reverse: energising supply at a property that has never had it, or restoring it after a temporary disconnection. Where an installation has been off supply a long time, that reconnection has an extra step, covered further down.

Why Can't a Regular Electrician Disconnect the Power?

Because the work happens on the network side of the connection point.

Your licensed electrician can do everything inside your installation, but the connection point belongs to the distributor's network, and only an accredited Level 2 ASP is authorised to work there. It is how the ASP Scheme works in NSW, and a distributor will not accept work done by anyone else.

There is a second reason that matters just as much on site. Coordinating with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, submitting the Notification of Service Work and scheduling the attendance is a process a Level 2 runs every week. Getting it wrong costs days at exactly the point in a project where days are expensive.

When Do You Need a Power Disconnection?

The usual triggers are straightforward once you see them listed.

You are demolishing a building or part of one. You are renovating and the works come near the service line or the meter box, which often means a meter box relocation is in scope too. You are having the roof replaced or re-clad and the overhead line is in the way. Trees are coming down near the supply. The property is being subdivided, which brings supply separation into the conversation. Or the building is going off supply permanently.

If you are running a build, the related job is temporary builders supply, which powers the site while the permanent connection does not yet exist.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Disconnections and Reconnections

Moving house, renovating, or pulling a building down? All three need the power disconnected properly at the point where your property meets the network, and none of them can be done by a general electrician. Power disconnection and reconnection is the single most common reason anyone in Sydney ever needs a Level 2 electrician, and it is usually the first time a property owner discovers the difference.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been handling power connections and disconnections across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised to work across Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy network areas, and we contact the distributor directly so you do not have to. Every disconnection and reconnection is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued when the job is finished. Free quotes, our Lifetime Labour Warranty on every job, and 24/7 availability with same-day response across Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

How Does the Disconnection Process Work?

The sequence is the same whichever direction you are going.

We confirm which network area the property sits in, because Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy run different requirements and your address decides which applies. We contact your distributor on your behalf and request the disconnection or reconnection. A technician attends on the scheduled day and physically disconnects or reconnects at the street connection point.

While the power is off, we inspect the installation. That is the part people do not expect and the part that saves them money, because a disconnection is the only time anyone will properly examine your consumer mains and point of attachment with the supply dead. If something needs rectifying before power goes back on, doing it then costs far less than a return visit. The same logic applies to a switchboard upgrade if the board is aged.

We complete any repairs to Australian wiring standards, confirm with the distributor, restore supply, and issue your Certificate of Compliance.

Where we work

Level 2 electricians across Greater Sydney

We are on the road across the whole metropolitan area, from the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs out to Penrith, up to the Hills District and down through the Sutherland Shire. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.

Reconnecting After a Long Disconnection

One detail worth knowing before you plan the job. Where an installation has been de-energised for six months or more, NSW requires a safety inspection by a qualified electrician before it is re-energised.

That catches people out on properties that have sat empty through a long build, a probate or a stalled development. It is not a problem when you know about it, and it is a genuine delay when you find out on the day you expected power back. If your property has been off supply a while, tell us when you call and we will build the inspection into the job.

Planning the Timing of Your Disconnection

The most common mistake we see is booking the disconnection too late. The distributor's process takes time and does not compress because your builder is standing on site.

Talk to us as soon as the date is roughly known, even if it moves later. Getting into the queue early costs nothing. It is also worth deciding upfront whether the supply going back on is the same supply that came off; if you are increasing capacity at the same time, that is a power supply upgrade and it is far simpler planned together than bolted on afterwards.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.

A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.

How much notice do you need for a disconnection?

For a planned disconnection, a few days is usually comfortable because the distributor notification has to go in and the timing has to suit the site. Demolition and urgent disconnections can move faster. Call and tell us the date you need it done by.

Can I get the power reconnected the same day it is disconnected?

Only if that was the plan from the start, such as a temporary disconnection while work happens on the switchboard. A disconnection for demolition ends the supply arrangement, and reconnecting later is a new connection with its own application.

Does the meter get removed during a disconnection?

Usually yes for a permanent disconnection, because the metering is part of the supply arrangement and your retailer needs to close the account against it. For a temporary disconnection the meter normally stays in place.

Do I need to tell my electricity retailer?

For a permanent disconnection, yes, so they can close your account and stop billing. We handle the distributor side; your retailer relationship stays yours. Tell them once the date is locked in.

Can you connect power to a brand new property?

Yes. A new connection needs the application lodged with Ausgrid or Endeavour, consumer mains run, a compliant switchboard and metering installed, then energising. It is the same process as a new development connection, just at a single-property scale.
