What Is an Electrical Defect Notice?

An electrical defect notice is issued by your electricity distributor when part of the connection between their network and your property does not meet the required safety and service rules.

It is not a penalty. Nobody is fining you. It is formal notification that something on your side of the connection needs bringing back into compliance, usually within a stated timeframe.

Distributor crews are in the street constantly, and most defect notices come from something visible: a bracket that has rusted or pulled away, a service line sagging into a tree, a private power pole leaning, a meter enclosure in poor condition, or clearances that no longer meet requirements.

Why Did I Get a Defect Notice When Nothing Is Broken?

Because compliance and function are different things.

Your power can be working perfectly while the connection assets fail the rules. A point of attachment can be corroded through and still hold. Consumer mains can be undersized for the current load and still deliver power right up until the day they do not. Clearance over a new pool can be inadequate the moment the pool is finished, with nothing about the electrical installation having changed at all.

The defect notice is the system doing its job before something fails, which is genuinely preferable to the alternative even when the timing is inconvenient.

What Happens If You Ignore an Electrical Defect Notice?

Your notice will have a timeframe on it, and the reason to take it seriously is that an unrectified defect can lead to supply being interrupted until the item is put right.

We will not tell you exactly what your distributor will do or when, because that is their decision and it depends on the item, the site and the circumstances. What we can tell you is that the situation does not improve on its own, the defect does not stop being your responsibility, and dealing with it early is always cheaper and less disruptive than dealing with it after supply has been affected. If your notice has a date on it that is close, call us and say so.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Defect Notice Rectification

Found an electrical defect notice in your letterbox or taped to your meter box and no idea what happens now? It is the most common way people discover they need a Level 2 electrician in Sydney, and it is almost always unexpected. The wording is technical, there is a date on it, and the phone number on the notice will tell you the rectification is yours to arrange.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been rectifying electrical defect notices across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised to work across both the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy network areas, which matters immediately because the two distributors do not run identical processes. Defect rectification is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued on completion, and it carries our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7.

What Are the Most Common Electrical Defect Items?

Most notices we rectify fall into a handful of categories.

Defect item on the notice What it usually means Typical rectification
Point of attachment Bracket, fixings or clearances no longer compliant Replace or relocate the attachment hardware
Overhead service mains Degraded insulation, damage or vegetation contact Replace the overhead service line and hardware
Underground service mains Aged cable, damaged conduit, water ingress Repair or replace the underground service section
Consumer mains Undersized, deteriorated or inadequately protected Replace and resize to calculated demand
Private power pole Rot, corrosion, lean or failed hardware Remedial work or full pole replacement
Meter enclosure Deterioration, access or protection issues Repair or relocate the meter box
Earthing Earthing arrangement not meeting requirements Rectify the earthing path

The exact scope depends on what is listed, what is actually at the property, and the requirements of your network area. Nobody can quote defect rectification accurately without knowing which item is on the notice.

Where we work

Level 2 electricians across Greater Sydney

We are on the road across the whole metropolitan area, from the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs out to Penrith, up to the Hills District and down through the Sutherland Shire. If you are not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.

How Does Defect Notice Rectification Work?

Six steps, in order.

Confirm the network area. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy have different requirements and your address determines which applies. Not a formality; it changes the process.

Read the notice and inspect. We look at what is listed against what is actually there. Sometimes the scope is narrower than the notice reads. Sometimes there is a second item nobody has flagged yet, which is common where a switchboard upgrade is overdue as well.

Define the scope and quote. You are told what the work is, what it costs and how long it takes before anything starts.

Carry out the rectification to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules.

Test and verify, then issue the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work and submit the Notification of Service Work to the distributor.

Support the close-out by ensuring the installation meets what the notice required and the paperwork is complete.

What Documentation Should You Receive?

This is how you prove the rectification was done properly.

You should receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, the CCEW, certifying the work was tested and complies. In NSW it is lodged through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal, and from 1 July 2026 lodgement is online only. Only a licensed electrician can issue one, which makes it a useful check on anyone you hire: if work has been done and no CCEW appeared, ask why.

A Notification of Service Work also goes to the distributor from the Level 2 ASP. That is separate from the CCEW and it is our job, not yours. Keep both; they matter when you sell, when you claim on insurance, and if a question ever arises about who did what.

Getting Defect Rectification Right First Time

Two things make defect jobs go badly, and both are avoidable.

Access. Most rectification needs someone at the meter board and often at the attachment outside. Clear access, safe ladder space, and for apartments strata approval organised in advance. On commercial sites, confirm restricted hours early; an after-hours booking is frequently the answer.

Scope that was always there. If the attachment is defective, the consumer mains behind it are frequently the same age and condition. Rectifying one and returning for the other in six months means two supply interruptions. We tell you what we can see and you decide, but you should be told.

Send Us Your Defect Notice

The fastest way to get an accurate answer is to photograph the notice and send it through.

Call 0485 824 714 or enquire with a picture of the electrical defect notice and, if you can take one safely, the item it refers to. We will explain it in plain terms and quote the rectification free. Sydney and the Blue Mountains, 24 hours with same-day response.

Are you on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that owns the wires in your street, and the paperwork differs between the two. Type your suburb and we will tell you which one you are on. We are accredited for both, so either way you are covered.

A guide only. Network boundaries can split a single street, so we always confirm the network before we lodge anything.

FAQs

Electrical Defect Notices questions, answered

The things people ask us most about electrical defect notices in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Still not sure?

Call us and describe the job. No sales pitch, just a straight answer.

0485 824 714
How long do I have to fix a defect notice?

The notice states the deadline, commonly 30 days to advise your intention and 60 days for the repairs, though urgent safety items can be much shorter. Read the dates on your notice, and if it is already close, tell us when you call.

Can the power really be disconnected over a defect notice?

Yes. If the work is not completed within the timeframe, the distributor can disconnect supply for safety reasons. That is the reason not to let a notice sit in a drawer.

I am renting. Whose problem is the defect notice?

The property owner's. The notice relates to the installation, not the occupant. Pass it to your landlord or agent as soon as you receive it, because the clock is already running.

Do I have to use the electrician the distributor suggests?

No. You choose your own licensed contractor. The requirement is that the work is done by someone appropriately licensed, and that Level 2 items are done by an accredited ASP.

How do I prove the defect has been fixed?

The rectification is notified to the distributor and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. That is what closes the notice out. Keep it with your property documents.
