What Are Consumer Mains?
Consumer mains are the cables running from your point of supply to your main switchboard. On an overhead service that means from the point of attachment down the wall to your meter box. On an underground service, from the connection pillar through to the same place.
Everything past that point is internal wiring, circuit by circuit. The consumer mains are the single cable everything in the property draws through, which is exactly why their size sets the ceiling on what the property can run. Our service lines overview covers what sits on the network side of them.

Why Do Older Consumer Mains Cause Problems?
Because the load changed and the cable did not.
A Sydney house built before the mid-1970s was wired for lighting, a fridge, a kettle and little else, and the consumer mains installed then were sized for exactly that. Since, we have added ducted air conditioning, induction cooktops, pool pumps, second fridges, dishwashers, home offices and now car chargers, all drawing through the same original cable.
Heat compounds it. Cable ratings drop as surrounding air temperature rises, and Sydney is not one climate. The western and south western suburbs routinely run far hotter than the coast on the same day. So the consumer mains in a 1960s Blacktown or Merrylands home are working hardest on precisely the afternoon when every ducted system in the street is running flat out. That is why supply problems in those suburbs cluster in January and February rather than spreading evenly through the year, and why so many power supply upgrades get booked in summer.

When Do Consumer Mains Need Upgrading?
The symptoms are recognisable once you know what you are looking at.
Lights dimming or flickering when a large appliance starts, particularly air conditioning. The main switch tripping when several things run together. A meter box warm to the touch. A burning or hot plastic smell near the switchboard. Visible cracking, perishing or discolouration on the cable running down the wall. Any of those warrants an inspection, and where the pattern is intermittent, supply fault finding will establish whether the mains or something further upstream is at fault.
Then there are planned triggers where nothing is wrong yet but load is about to increase: adding ducted air conditioning, a pool, a workshop, building a granny flat, converting to three phase power, or installing an EV charger.
A warm meter box or a burning smell is not a next-month job. Call our emergency Level 2 electricians.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Consumer Mains Upgrades
Lights dimming when the air conditioner kicks in? That is not a globe problem and it is not your imagination. It is the most common symptom of consumer mains working harder than they were ever sized to, and across Sydney's older suburbs it is close to universal.
Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been inspecting, repairing and upgrading consumer mains across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. Every consumer mains job is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work on completion and our Lifetime Labour Warranty behind the work. Free quotes, same-day response, available 24/7 across Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

How Is the Right Consumer Mains Size Determined?
Through a maximum demand calculation, not a guess and not a default.
Maximum demand is a calculated estimate of the greatest load a property will draw under normal operating conditions. It accounts for what is installed, what is planned, how the loads realistically coincide, and the property's supply arrangement. That calculation determines cable size, whether the existing single phase supply is adequate, and whether the service and protection arrangements need to change with it.
It is the difference between an upgrade that solves the problem and one that moves it. Oversizing costs money you did not need to spend; undersizing means doing it again.

Consumer Mains and Electrical Defect Notices
Consumer mains are a frequent item on distributor defect notices, usually alongside the point of attachment.
Common findings are cable undersized for the installed load, deteriorated or damaged insulation, inadequate mechanical protection where the cable runs down an external wall, and non-compliant installation methods from a previous era. Where Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy have issued a notice there is a rectification timeframe attached and the work needs a Level 2 ASP; see electrical defect notices for how the process runs.

Doing the Consumer Mains Upgrade Once, Properly
Consumer mains rarely need replacing in isolation, and this is where planning saves real money.
If the cable is being replaced, supply has to come off. While it is off, that is the only sensible time to deal with the point of attachment if it is aged, the meter if it is due for changing, and the switchboard if it still runs ceramic fuses or has no spare capacity. Doing those as four separate jobs means four disconnections and four mobilisations.
It is also the moment to decide whether you are upgrading to what you need now or what you will need in five years. If a second dwelling, a pool or an EV is anywhere on the horizon, size for it now; supply separation is far cheaper planned into a mains upgrade than retrofitted afterwards.

FAQs
Consumer Mains questions, answered
The things people ask us most about consumer mains in Sydney. If yours is not here, call and ask.
How do I know if my consumer mains are undersized?
Common signs are lights dimming when a large appliance starts, the main switch tripping under load, or an electrician telling you the cable feeding your board is smaller than the installation now needs. Older homes running modern loads are the usual case.
Can I upgrade the switchboard without upgrading the mains?
Sometimes, but it is often false economy. A new board fed by tired undersized mains still has the same bottleneck. If the mains are the limiting factor, doing both at once avoids paying for access and an outage twice.
How is the right cable size worked out?
From the maximum demand of the installation, the length of the run and the installation method, calculated to AS/NZS 3000. It is not a guess or a standard size; it is a calculation based on what the property actually draws.
Does replacing consumer mains mean opening walls?
Not usually. Most runs follow the existing path through a conduit, roof space or along the exterior. Where the existing route is unusable we discuss the alternative with you before starting rather than improvising on the day.
My defect notice mentions consumer mains. Is that serious?
It means the distributor has identified the mains as non-compliant and there is a deadline to fix it. Ignoring it risks disconnection. Send us the notice and we will tell you exactly what the item requires.
