What Is a Smart Meter?

A smart meter is a digital electricity meter recording consumption in intervals and communicating that data remotely, rather than accumulating a running total somebody has to come and read.

The practical differences for a household are that nobody needs access to your meter box to read it, usage is recorded through the day rather than as a single quarterly number, and the meter can measure flow in both directions, which is what makes solar export possible.

The older accumulation meters, the ones with the spinning disc or mechanical dials, do none of that. Our metering overview covers the full range of meter types and changes.

Why Would Your Meter Be Changed to a Smart Meter?

Four common paths.

You are installing solar. An accumulation meter cannot measure export, so a smart meter changeover is part of every solar installation and it is the step that most often delays them.

Your existing meter has failed or reached the end of its life. Where the symptom is intermittent rather than obvious, supply fault finding establishes whether the meter or something upstream is at fault.

Other electrical work requires it. A power supply upgrade, conversion to three phase, a meter box relocation or a consumer mains replacement all bring metering into scope.

A new connection. New builds and new dwellings get modern metering as standard, usually as part of a new development connection.

When Does Solar Force a Smart Meter Changeover?

Almost always, and the timing catches people out.

A solar installation is not finished when panels are on the roof. It is finished when the system is connected, the metering measures export, and the arrangement is recorded correctly. Plenty of Sydney households have had panels sitting idle for weeks because the smart meter step was left to the end and treated as somebody else's job.

If solar is planned, deal with the metering conversation at the start rather than after installation day. It is also the natural moment to look at whether your off peak hot water should move to a daytime run, since with solar the cheapest power you have is generated at midday rather than bought at 2am.

Why Choose Sydney Level 2 Electrician for Smart Meter Installation

Going solar, or had a letter saying your meter is being replaced? Either way the physical work is the same, and a smart meter installation can only be carried out by an accredited Level 2 ASP. The meter connects on the network side of your supply, which puts it outside what a general electrician is authorised to touch.

Sydney Level 2 Electrician has been installing and changing meters across Sydney for 15 years. We are an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Government's ASP Scheme, authorised on both the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks. Every smart meter installation is completed to AS/NZS 3000:2018 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work on completion and our Lifetime Labour Warranty behind it. Free quotes, Sydney and the Blue Mountains, available 24/7 with same-day response.

What Happens During a Smart Meter Installation?

A straightforward changeover is not a long job, but a few things are worth knowing.

Supply comes off for the changeover, usually a short interruption rather than a whole day, but an interruption nonetheless. The old meter is removed, the smart meter installed and connected, the installation tested, supply restored, and the compliance documentation issued with the distributor notified.

Access matters. We need to reach the meter box and it needs to be clear. On apartments and shared buildings, strata approval and building access have to be arranged in advance, which is usually the longest part of the exercise and often means booking after-hours Level 2 work.

What Else Should Be Checked While the Meter Is Off?

This is the part that gets skipped, and the part that costs people money later.

The meter sits in a box, on a panel, fed by consumer mains, next to a switchboard. If the meter is forty years old, so is everything around it. Fitting a new digital meter to a cracked enclosure, failing panel, undersized mains or a board still running ceramic fuses is putting a new component into a system that is due anyway.

Three things worth looking at while someone is already there. The condition of the consumer mains, particularly on any pre-1975 property. Whether the switchboard has RCD protection and spare capacity. And whether the backing panel is one of the older asbestos-containing types common in pre-1990s Sydney housing, which needs planning around rather than discovering mid-job.

None of that means doing everything at once. It means being told, so the decision is yours rather than a surprise in two years.

Do I have to accept a smart meter?

In most cases a meter reaching end of life or failing is replaced with a digital meter, because accumulation meters are being phased out across NSW. The practical question is usually timing and who does the switchboard work, rather than whether it happens.

Why does the installer say my switchboard needs work first?

Older boards were not built around modern metering. Asbestos backing, no main switch, insufficient space or non-compliant wiring all have to be dealt with before a new meter can go in safely. That is Level 2 and general electrical work, not the meter itself.

Will a smart meter change my bill?

The meter measures, it does not set prices. What can change is the tariff structure your retailer moves you onto, such as time of use. Ask your retailer what tariff applies after the change so there are no surprises.

How long is the power off for a smart meter install?

Typically one to two hours for a straightforward changeover. Longer where the switchboard needs remedial work at the same time. We give you the expected window before the day.

Can you install a smart meter if my meter box has asbestos?

The asbestos backing has to be dealt with properly first, which is a specific process rather than something to work around. Tell us if you suspect asbestos when you book, because it changes how the job is scoped and scheduled.
